Do I Look 6 Foot 2?

So I got the best commercial audition the other day…

Most of the time, in order to land an audition, an actor (or his agent) has to submit a photo and resume to a casting director. This usually happens after the actor (or his agent) has seen a breakdown (description) of the role, and decides he’s right for the part. If the casting director agrees, the actor gets a phonecall (there are other ways to get an audition, but none I’d tell my mother about).

So I got the best commercial audition the other day…

I get a call from a casting director I’ve never met, and there is an audition set for me to attend. It’s a bit short notice (next day), but that’s not uncommon, especially with commercials. The sides (audition script) are emailed to me, and when I read them, I start to get a bit uneasy. It’s for the Brawny Man.

Now, if memory serves, the Brawny Paper Towel Man is a giant, hulking, outdoorsey man, not an average-sized computer-geek. But, who knows, maybe they’re going in a new direction. To get a better idea, I took a look at the breakdown. This is what I found:

(MALE) Late 30s, 6’2" – 6’4", 225 lbs. White/Caucasian, naturally tan. Brown hair. Rugged good looks, may have facial hair.

Uhh… huh?

That… is… sooooo not me. But I went anyway. I mean, really, maybe they’re going in a new direction!

I get to the audition and… all the guys are late 30′s, early 40′s, and look like they could break me in half. Awesome. When I got called into the audition, the casting director chuckled and I thought "yup, that’s what I would do too." But he was a good sport and let me read anyway.

When it was all over he told me he called me in off of a postcard I had sent (ahh… no height/weight info on there) and just wanted to meet me. Then he told me he would call me in when I am "right for something."

Dude. Seriously. I hope so.

Best. Audition. Ever. Well… almost.

Doesn’t quite match up to the time I had to sing a song from Guys and Dolls in a Welsh accent while manipulating a puppet. And no, I’m not kidding.

But that’s another story.
